On Friday, March 23, the Pedal4Prizes chairs and assistants, Kathryn Latour, Steve Hubbell, Jeff Dean, Penny Ellson, Linda Baker, Renu Virdi, and Calvin Latour, were armed with Rice Krispy treats in anticipation of a flurry of bike riding since the skies were blue, clear, and glorious. Thank you, assistants! Alas, our biking numbers for the day were a bit on the low side since we tallied only 453 bikes. One student explained that there was a huge band field trip scheduled which meant that many students elected to drive rather than balance their heavy instruments on their bikes. That would account for some, but not the total dip in our statistics for this time of year. (It also makes the P4P team aware that perhaps our students could benefit from some instruction on how to make use of bike baskets that can accommodate these instruments.)
If you are a Gunn student and chose not to ride your bike on Friday, March 23, we would like to know what prevented you from using this environmentally-friendly mode of transportation on that day, especially if you normally bike to school. Please email P4P Co-Chair Steve Hubbell at hubbellsj@gmail.com and help us to understand what factors motivated your choice. The more information the P4P team has about reasons why students choose not to bike, the better we can address them.
Our next P4P event will be on Monday, April 16 when we team up with the Green Team to celebrate Earth Week. A raffle will be held for prizes such as gift cards from Sprinkles, iTunes, and Vans. If you bike, walk, or bus, you may collect your raffle ticket on the morning of April 16. Winners will be chosen at our Earth Day
events during lunch period in the Quad.

Pedal4Prizes update
Many of Gunn's freshmen bikers were pleasantly surprised to receive Rice
Krispy Treats on Friday morning (Oct 7) at our first monthly Pedal4Prizes
event of the school year. For those uninitiated, Pedal4Prizes, sponsored by
the PTSA, rewards all students who elect to bike to school that day. Of
course, the real rewards for choosing a biking commute are the positive
physical and mental effects from the exercise, and the reduction of car
exhaust in our environment. Our volunteers, Jeff Dean, Ruth Harris,
Christine Fawcett, Penny Ellson, Kathryn Latour, and Steve Hubbell counted
595 bikes, which means that even with the rain this week, around 1/3 of the
studentbody biked!
Speaking of bikes, we noticed that a shocking number of bikes were left
unlocked. Bikes can - and do - get stolen even at Gunn. Most bike thefts are
opportunistic, meaning that if a bike is unlocked, someone who hadn't
intended on stealing a bike will spontaneously decide to take it for a joy
ride then dump it somewhere. With the new bike racks, it is easier to use a
U-lock to secure the bike's frame to the rack, which is the safest way to
lock a bike. But, even a simple lock will deter most bike thefts. One of our
new P4P mottos is: "Your Bike: If you like it, lock it."
Plan on biking during the week of homecoming (Oct 24-28). We will be
raffling off homecoming game tickets at our next P4P event!

PROM: Memorandum to Parents and Guests
Submitted by Katya Villalobos, Principal
PROM: Memorandum to Parents and Guests
March 7, 2011
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students:
The staff of Gunn High School sincerely hopes that you have a wonderful experience at the 2011 Prom—as my first I am looking forward to it. Our presumption is that this event will not be marred for any of you by inappropriate behavior. As such, this letter is provided as a reminder of the school rules, which govern the use of alcohol or drugs in connection with a school function.
As you may know, there is a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Palo Alto Unified School District and the Palo Alto Police Department, which prohibits the possession, use, or sale of alcohol, drugs or look-alikes to/by any student or even being in a location where drugs or alcohol are being served or provided. Specifically, the following provisions in the MOU cover the prom; any official school function and travel to and from official school functions.
It is important that parents, guardians, and students be aware of the fact that these rules apply even though the event is not on school property. Parties, which take place before or after the prom, particularly in close proximity to where the event is scheduled, fall within this category. We do not condone students renting rooms without adult supervision or arranging post-prom parties where alcohol could be consumed. Because of our concern about these issues, students must use school-sponsored transportation to and from Prom. This year, ALL participants in Prom will be provided with Charter Bus transportation to and from the prom location. Consequences for inappropriate behavior at the prom may include school suspension, full disciplinary hearing, social probation from remaining school activities (including dances, senior picnic, and graduation), community service, and counseling.
First and foremost, we are concerned about the physical and emotional safety of ALL OUR students. We strongly encourage you to plan activities that are safe and which will ensure that this will be a positive and memorable experience for all of you. This is a special event particularly for our graduating seniors and I know it will be—fun and safe. On a personal note I cannot wait to see all the students in their finest duds and thank you again for your continued support of the Gunn community.
Sincerely,
Katya Villalobos Principal

Updates on Arastradero Road from Palo Alto's Chief Transportation Official
Quick Updates by intersection:
Clemo Dr Crosswalk
- handicap ramp work done
- flashing beacon system done but left off until the marked crosswalk goes in
- marked crosswalk should go in after the signal work in about two weeks
Hubbartt Drive Speed Signs
- when I left the field this afternoon they were finishing the one sign in the median facing westbound traffic towards the school and starting the second sign facing eastbound traffic towards Donald.
- both sign installations should be complete by Thursday
- we will need to do some tree trimming around the sign facing eastbound traffic next week
- striping work around island should go in after the signal work in about two weeks
Coulombe Traffic Signal
- handicap ramp construction work underway
- new pole should start going up next week
- construction estimated for completion end of next week but the left-turn movement will not be active for about one month while we finish procurement of video detection equipment. The operation after initial construction will be a permissive left turn as it was before the start of construction until then.
- Striping work for the crosswalks will happen immediately after the work at Clemo and Hubbart is done.
Restriping from El Camino Real to Alta Mesa
- Public Works Engineering was going to do this for us but they don't have any contingency funding left in their contract
- I have three bid requests out and should have a low-bid by Thursday. We'll work on getting the low-bidder on board quickly so they can do the restriping within three weeks.
Note from Arthur Keller: The restriping on the Westbound direction from El Camino Real to Alta Mesa is to lengthen the two-lane portion before it merges down to one lane, in order to allow for more stacking of cars. Currently, wiaitng cars fill up this area, leaving no room for Westbound traffic to cross El Camino Real at peak traffic times.

Update On Arastradero Restriping Trial
submitted by Grace Yu
Update On Arastradero Restriping Trial:
Initial repaving and restriping was implemented in August and September. The trial project includes a lane reduction on Arastradero Road from 4- to 3-lanes including turn lanes for safer neighborhood access and better controlled turning movements. The first post-construction community meeting was held on October 14. City staff presented an update on project construction activities, initial traffic data findings & project enhancements to implementation during the trial period, and accepted public input on the project.
Two additional planned improvements are being scheduled. One is a traffic signal modification at Arastradero Road and Coulombe Road to enhance left turn signal phasing for eastbound Arastradero Road traffic. The other is two new raised median islands at Arastradero Road & Clemo Avenue with a pedestrian activated flashing beacon warning system and at Arastradero Road & Hubbart St with a new vehicle speed feedback sign to encourage vehicle speed reductions along the street. Monitoring will continue and additional community input meetings will be scheduled later this winter.
The following project enhancements are being implemented this Winter in response to the community input on the project:
• Discussions with Caltrans about the El Camino Real Traffic Signal Operations (Caltrans, not the City of Palo Alto, controls the El Camino Real intersection and traffic signal)
• Alta Mesa intersection signage and striping improvement to help keep the intersection clear from El Camino Real queues
• Arastradero Road roadway marking changes between Donald Dr-Terman Rd and King Arthur Ct to help improve left turn vehicle access to both streets
Further updates will be released by the city as implementation schedules are finalized with contractors.
This project is an on-going one-year trial with monitoring and adjustments being made during the trial period. Evaluation of the project will be based on predetermined specific performance measures which include: crash reduction, transportation mode shift, and 85th percentile speed reduction goals, maintaining point-to-point travel times within the study area.
If you missed the meeting, written comments may be sent via email to: transportation@cityofpaloalto.org

Major construction on the Arastradero Road – Trial Restriping project is now complete with street repairs, microsurfacing pavement surface application, and roadway restriping installed over August and September. Pending roadway improvements include the installation of final bike and parking lane lines, and bike lane stencils; installation of these items is delayed due to a nationwide plastic roadway material shortage. Two additional improvements scheduled for installation in November include a new marked crosswalk and raised median‐island at Arastradero Road & Clemo Drive and a traffic signal modification at Arastradero Road & Coulombe Drive to provide protected left turn phasing for eastbound Arastradero Road traffic.
The City’s first post‐construction community meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 21, 2010 from 6:30PM – 8:30PM at the Terman Middle School – Cafetorium Room. We encourage students, residents, and commuters to attend to provide their feedback on the project.

Changes to Arastradero and Miranda
Submitted by Arthur Keller, ptc@kellers.org
The Phase 2 Arastradero Road Trial Restriping Project between El Camino Real and Foothill Expressway began on August 9 based on the information presented at the public meeting held at Juana Briones Elementary School on August 5. Resurfacing and restriping activities temporarily will impact traffic flow and lengthen the time it takes to travel through the Arastradero corridor.
Though the long-term expectation for the Arastradero restriping is that it will not increase point-to-point travel times on the corridor, during the first month or two of the trial drivers should expect delays as construction is completed and road users get used to the new configuration. Please visit the City of Palo Alto website for project schedule information.
If possible, please use alternative means of transportation (bike, walk, carpool, VTA bus) to travel to school and allow extra travel time if driving is the only commuting option for you.
The PTSA Traffic Safety Team has updated "How to Get to Gunn" with VTA Bus and updated bike route information. Please review it as there are important changes in the fall such as the closure of the Miranda Entrance and the termination of drop-offs at the Miranda Bus Stop.
Expect to see an increased police presence on the corridor to facilitate a safe transition.

Those students were Peter Huang (9th - $35 Target card), Skyler Dean (9th - $25 Rasputin card), Lisa Fawcett (12th - $25 Baja Fresh card), Charlie Chang (12th - $25 Target card), Rachelle Goodrich-Gere ($25 Target card), Anne Jaffe (9th - $10 Baja Fresh card), Gurpal Virdi (10th - $10 Target card), Yuan Yuan (9th - $10 Baja Fresh card), and Sierra Leder (10th - $10 Target card). We have budgeted to do this reward event again in the fall so plan your biking purchases accordingly. And now as the school year ends, please remember to bike often but safely: observe the laws, properly wear your helmets, and be watchful of traffic. We will be back next year with more rewards!

Parent Drivers: Be a Role Model in the Gunn Parking Lot
Keep students safe, reduce traffic back-ups. When driving in the parking lot, please remember to follow the parking lot rules:
- Bicyclists and pedestrians have the right of way; you must yield to them.
- Front lot pick-up after school is for carpools only; you must be picking up more than one student.
- Use the back lot (by the gym) if you are picking up just one student.
- Stopping and waiting for your student is OK only in the loading zone - next to the curb - make sure you are pulled over completely and are clear of the through lane. Or you may pull into a parking space and wait.
- There are 2 through lanes in the front lot - these are not for pickup - do not stop and wait in these lanes.
- Always use your turn signal when you change lanes.
- Let other drivers merge, especially if someone has illegally blocked the through lane.
- Do not pick up students in the through lane - it is dangerous and blocks traffic - have the students wait until you pull over next to the curb.
- Slow down in the lot!
- Arrive early and get a space in the loading zone.
- Get to school later, after the parking lot has emptied.
- Pick your child up in the back lot - it has a bigger loading zone.
- Pick up your child off-site.
- If you are having someone else pick up your child, have them do a late pickup, so traffic is lighter.

Safe Ride Seeks Volunteers
Karin Bloom, M.S.
Project Director , Palo Alto Drug Alcohol Community Collaborative (PADACC)
Safe Ride, run by American Red Cross Silicon Valley Chapter youth volunteers, is ready to start up again with the new school year. The program offers high school students an alternative to driving while intoxicated or riding with an intoxicated driver. Instead, students can call the toll-free Safe Ride number (1-877-753-RIDE) and two trained and sober local teens will arrive to transport the caller safely to their house. The service is completely free and confidential.
Every Friday and Saturday night, teams of student volunteers, working with a trained adult supervisor, man a hotline at the American Red Cross Silicon Valley Chapter’s Palo Alto office. They answer calls and dispatch two-person driver teams to pick up students in a Red Cross vehicle. Last year, the Safe Ride program had 45 volunteer drivers, who provided over 600 rides.
Lucas Matze, a student coordinator for Safe Ride, says, “It is a unique program that provides vital safety to our community. I volunteer for Safe Ride because I know that my work is doing good. Every time I drop someone off at their house, it's one less person on the road, potentially endangering themselves or others.”
Lucas and other students like him logged over 1,500 hours of volunteer time in the 2008-2009 school year. These dedicated volunteers also promote the Safe Ride program at their schools and in their community, recruiting other volunteers, holding fundraisers and providing peer education on the dangers of drinking and driving. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, traffic crashes are the number one killer of teens (15-20 years old) and 31% of teen traffic deaths are alcohol-related. In 2007 an estimated 7.8 percent of 16 or 17 year olds reported driving under the influence of alcohol in the past year.
Safe Ride was created in 1984 by a group of high school students from Palo Alto and Gunn High School who lost a friend in a car accident caused by teen drunk driving. 25 years later, thousands of local teens have been saved from the perils of drunk driving thanks to Safe Ride. The program has spread to eight different high schools throughout the region. Participating schools include Palo Alto, Gunn, Castilleja, Sacred Heart Prep, Los Altos, Mountain View, Menlo and Menlo Atherton.
Safe Ride exists because of the efforts of many great volunteers and the generous support of public donations. For more information or to find out how you can support or volunteer for Safe Ride, contact Gabriela Pierre at pierreg@usa.redcross.org.
