WANTED:   PARENT REPRESENTATIVES for

2013-2015 Gunn Site Council

Site Council needs two (2) parent representatives to serve a two-year term, starting next September. Are you interested? Here are the FAQS:

1.    WHO CAN SERVE: Any Gunn parent who wants to work on policy development and financial decision-making in a cooperative setting with 5 faculty, 2 other personel, 3 other parents and 4 students. Each representative serves a 2-year term. A maximum of 4 consecutive years (2 terms in a row) is allowed, according to the bylaws. Thus, two of the four parents on Site Council are up for re-election or replacement each year. (YOUR CHILD MUST BE A SOPHOMORE, FRESHMAN OR 8TH GRADER THIS YEAR IN ORDER FOR YOU TO SERVE.)

·      WHAT DOES SITE COUNCIL DO: Around $23,000 in funds from state and district grants are given to Site Council to spend on departmental projects which are "new and innovative" and/or significantly benefit our students and staff...everything from The College Pathways Project in Guidance to Creating Instructional Videos for Students and The Common Ground and Slow Food Project in World Language to updating classroom technology to Expanding the Reading Collection in the Library. Each spring, we issue a call for proposals from every department on campus for the following year. Each project is evaluated to determine its effectiveness in meeting its projected goals. We additionally work on the School Plan, and work on WASC, as well as issues that crop up through the year.

·      WHEN DO WE MEET? You must be willing to devote 2.0 hours a month for 1 or 2 monthly meetings on Monday afternoons at 3:55 here at Gunn in the Staff Lounge.

·      WHAT QUALIFICATIONS ARE NEEDED? You must have a child enrolled at Gunn High School, possess some financial and/or policy decision-making abilities, and be able to attend meetings at least once a month. No, you do not need to be a CPA or CEO - just genuinely interested in taking the time to learn how Gunn operates and a desire to improve life and learning here for our students and staff.

·      HOW DO YOU APPLY? Complete the form below and return to the Site Council office NO LATER THAN MON., FEBRUARY 25. The slate of candidates will be published and posted for two weeks on GunnConnection - one vote per household is allowed. The paper and/or e-ballots will be tabulated with the results posted in April or May.

Flu Vaccine

It’s NOT TOO LATE to get your flu vaccine!  

Flu cases are now on the rise in California and according to the director of the CDC this flu season is shaping up to be “worse than average”.   The BEST way to protect yourself and those around you from the flu is to get vaccinated.  The CDC recommends that people get vaccinated against influenza as long as influenza viruses are circulating, which can occur as late as May. Call your local pharmacy or health care provider to get your flu vaccine. Children ages 4-18 can get vaccinated for FREE through the month of January at all Target pharmacies. 

Another important way to protect others is to stay home when you are sick.  If your child does become ill PLEASE  keep them home from school.  Signs of flu include:

    

* Fever or Feeling Feverish/Chills

*   Cough

*   Sore Throat

*   Runny or Stuffy Nose

* Muscle or Body Aches

*   Headache

* Extreme Fatigue

                *   Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.  

If a child has had a fever, he/she may not return to school until it has been normal for 24 hours (without taking medications to reduce fever)

Making healthy choices at school and at home can help prevent the flu and prevent spreading flu to others.  Here are some things you can do daily to help prevent illness:

* Stay home when you are sick. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

* Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue away after use and wash your hands.    If a tissue is not available, cover your mouth and nose with your sleeve, not your hand.

* Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. If soap and water are not available, use      an alcohol-based hand rub.

*Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.

*Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill.

Draft Gunn Walk and Roll to School Updates

On Wednesday, January 16^th, a crisp and cold winter morning, we had our first P4P event of 2013! Volunteers Lawrence Baker, Steve Hubbell, Penny Ellson, Wouter Latour, and – new to Gunn – Terrell Sweat handed out treats to most of the 562 cyclists, a very respectable turnout for such a cold morning! We extend apologies to students who found the bike racks near the library full and we are working with Gunn administration to organize more parking there. We also rewarded students who had arrived for an early practice or class and stopped by to receive their treats, which we encourage all early bikers to do, no questions asked. We appreciated that nearly all students appeared to be wearing their helmets and observing safe biking techniques, as well.

We also handed out a flyer to welcome students to join us on Tuesday, January 29^th at 7pm in the Gunn Library for a brief meeting to discuss safe routes to school. This meeting is a result of the Gunn Walk and Roll to School that took place in the Fall where students, parents, and staff examined the current biking routes and gave input as to where improvements are needed. The meeting on January 29^th will serve to review the proposed improvements and give further suggestions as to where the public funds can best be used. All students, parents and staff are encouraged to attend and contribute to the meeting.

Wrestling

With Junior Cadence Lee leading the way, the Gunn wrestling team came up with its best performance this season producing five individual champions and a second-place team finish at the San Ramon Invitational, last Saturday. This marks the fourth meet in a row that the Titans have finished either first or second, making this the best start in Gunn wrestling history.

Lee won the 106-pound title with two pins and a 3-0 record and was named the Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament. In addition to Lee, Daniel Papp at 126 (4-0 with two pins, one tech fall), Eric Cramer at 132 (4-0 with three pins), Ian Cramer at 138 (4-0 with three pins), and Stephen Martin at 182 (3-0 with two pins) also won their weight groups. Blaze Lee (Sr.) was second at 152 (3-1 with two pins) and Sean Lydster was runner-up at 195 (2-1 with one pin). Harsha Mokkarala was third at 220 (4-1 with three pins) and Eric Calderon was third at 285 (3-1 with one pin). 

The Titans will host crosstown rival PALY this Thursday, with the JV starting at 5:30 and the varsity following immediately after. On Friday and Saturday, both squads will compete at the prestigious Mid Cal Invitational at Gilroy High.

 

Basketball - The Titans (3-0, 10-3) hold sole possession of first place in SCVAL following a 56-45 win over visiting Saratoga. Gunn got 15 points from Zoe Zwerling and 13 from Claire Klausner. 

Zwerling also grabbed seven rebounds while Sarah Klem had nine points and four rebounds for the Titans, who trailed by 16-14 after one quarter and still were down at the half, 25-24. Gunn finally pulled ahead in the third quarter after holding the Falcons (1-4, 12-5) to just three points.

 

Boys’ Soccer - Gunn HS beat Los Altos @ Los Altos 1-0. Stefan Jensen took a shot outside the box only to have it ricochet out to teammate Elyas Daadi who took an incredible bending shot to score the only goal for Gunn High School. The team played solid defense and managed to keep Los Altos from capitalizing on their attempts at goal. Boot Bullwinkle had many timely saves in goal which helped to keep the team in the game. Gunn's next game is against Mountain View High School at Gunn on Friday, 1/18 at 3:30pm. Come cheer the boy's on!!

Free or Reduced Fees: Students who have a verifiable financial need are eligible for reduced fees. Check with the Assistant Principal Mrs. Klein about this.

*Pre-administration sessions:  Students will be required to complete one of the three pre-administration sessions prior to testing.  During the 40-minute session, students fill out personal identification and demographic information and receive an AP Testing Number that is required for all their AP exams. 

**Language Lab training sessions:  Students testing in a language lab will have to complete training on lab usage as well.  Speak with your teacher for details. 

Special Notes for ALL NON-GUNN students:

• Non-Gunn students are required to register after March 4^th.
• Non-Gunn students who are taking a language lab exam will be required to come in for a lab use training session prior to testing.  Date and time to be announced.
• Not completing this task can forfeit a student’s seat for testing. 

Special Notes About AP Chinese:

• Gunn students enrolled in our AP Chinese class have first priority, followed by Gunn students not enrolled in the course by grade level seniority, then non-Gunn students in order of time registered.
• Non-Gunn students can ONLY register during the Late Registration window.  They will be placed for the exam only after all current Gunn students have been registered. 
• Due to lab size constraints, some students can expect to test on Thursday May 23^rd.  You will be notified of your testing date.
